Rosacea & Telangiectasia

Rosacea is not an uncommon skin condition affecting men and women alike. It is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels on the face. Telangiectasia are often seen in together with rosacea but may occur on their own. This is a condition where dilated capillaries (or very tiny blood vessels) can appear around the nose and cheeks. Both rosacea and telangiectasia may cause facial discomfort or embarrassment due to the visible signs of redness, increased texture, and enlarged blood vessels.

The exact cause of both rosacea and telangiectasia is unknown but certain triggers such as stress, sun exposure, alcohol consumption, exercise, hot foods, spicy foods, and extreme temperatures are thought to exacerbate the symptoms.

Fortunately, there are various treatments available:

• Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves tiny needles being used on the face to create micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production in the skin and can reduce redness and dilated blood vessels associated with these conditions.
• Medical grade skin care products may also help to reduce inflammation and redness associated with both rosacea and telangiectasia.
• Non-ablative lasers, such as Dye-VL, can treat pigmentation concerns and also minimize the visible telangiectasia with a series of treatments.
• Prescriptions specifically designed for treating rosacea (such as topical antibiotics or topical steroids) can be used.
