Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMJ pain, is a type of musculoskeletal pain that occurs in the jaw. It affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects the lower jaw to the skull. Symptoms may include pain or tenderness in the jaw, difficulty chewing, clicking and popping sounds when opening and closing the mouth, and limited movement of the jaw.
TMJ pain is believed to be caused by a combination of factors. These factors may include arthritis, bruxism (clenching or grinding teeth), misalignment of teeth or jaws, frequent gum-chewing, stress-related muscle tension, trauma or injury to the jaw, or long-term use of a dental appliance.
Neurotoxin injections have been found to be an effective treatment for TMJ pain. These injections help relax the muscles around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), reducing inflammation and pain. The injection procedure typically takes only a few minutes and is relatively easy to tolerate, with little to no discomfort during or after treatment.
Most people begin to experience relief from their TMJ symptoms after two to three weeks following the injection, depending on the severity of the pain and individual response to treatment. It is, however, important to know that neurotoxin injections are not a permanent solution for TMJ pain; they typically need to be repeated every six months in order to maintain relief from symptoms.
